Ningbo University was established in 1986. In 1996, Ningbo Normal College and Zhejiang Shuichan College, Ningbo were merged into Ningbo University. Ningbo University Medical School was founded in 1998 under the donation of Dr. Tang from Hong Kong, an expert in Epidemiology and Health Statistics.
NBU is recognized by WHO and the graduates of MBBS program are eligible to take the Medical Licensing Examinations held by the medical councils in different countries such as MCI. The international programs and English teaching have been carried out vigorously in the medical school. Successively, it has established exchange projects for academic research, teachers and students training with the medical school of University of Angers in France, The University of Skovde in Sweden, RWTH Aachen University in German etc.
The university has five campuses, covering an area over 3000 acres, with a floor space totaling 790,000 square meters. The main campus, adjacent to Feng Hua Road in the north and Yongjiang River in the south, offers wide space for study and research with magnificent buildings and pleasant lawns and greenery.The medical school has 5 research institutes： Research institute of biochemistry & molecular biology, research institute of physiology & pharmacology, research institute of pathology & pathogenic biology, research institute of preventive medicine, research institute of anatomy and histology & embryology. It has two research centers: Ningbo diagnosis center of molecular medicine (Pro. Qijun Shen, the former executive dean works as the director of the center) and experimental center of basic medicine. The school takes charge of the laboratory animal center and the behavioral neuroscience center of Ningbo University (both are university level).
